Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Can we reverse hair loss?  “Seventy to seventy-five percent of women will experience some form of hair loss,” reveals Dr. Renee A. Beach, a renowned dermatologist at DermAtelier in Toronto. The Canadian Dermatology Association adds that by age 50, four out of ten women exhibit noticeable signs of hair thinning. Beyond this milestone, both men and women may encounter androgenetic alopecia, which typically manifests as a gradual thinning of hair.

For the younger generation, the effects can be especially profound, as hair frequently represents an essential facet of our identity. Addressing hair loss becomes more than a matter of physical restoration; it is also a journey toward reclaiming self-esteem.

The first step in addressing hair loss is to determine whether it stems from dormant follicles or permanent scalp damage. The most common causes include genetics, stress, scalp infections, hormonal changes, pregnancy or childbirth, deficiencies in iron, vitamin B12, or vitamin D; polycystic ovary syndrome; chemotherapy and scalp trauma.

Types Of Hair Loss

 1. Telogen Effluvium is a non-scarring condition characterized by excessive hair shedding. This type of hair loss can be triggered by various factors, including illness, stress, or hormonal changes.

2. Androgenic Alopecia refers to the progressive thinning of hair over time, primarily associated with genetics and the aging process.

3. Dormant Hair Follicles are inactive yet alive, and they can be stimulated for healthy growth through appropriate treatments.

4. Dead Hair Follicles result from scalp damage and cannot be revived.

5. Folliculitis is the inflammation of hair follicles, often caused by blockages from oil, sweat, or dead skin cells. This condition can lead to pimples and hinder hair growth.

Approach To Treatment

Dermatologists recommend a combination of multi-faceted treatments to stimulate healthy hair growth in dormant follicles that are still potentially active. This regimen includes scalp-based shampoos enriched with ingredients such as biotin, rosemary, peptides, collagen, and caffeine, as well as hydrating, non-clogging conditioners and regular scalp massages. Positive results have also been observed with LED red light therapy, along with a nutritious diet that incorporates vitamin D, B12, and biotin for individuals who are deficient.

My Hair Loss Journey

My personal journey with hair loss began with chemotherapy. After cancer treatment, I've faced a long road to restore my hair to a normal, healthy growth cycle. Each week brings small improvements, and I remain hopeful. Research indicates that it can take 18 months to two years to achieve full follicle activation. I am currently eight months into this transformative process.
