A Moroccan Discovery

Morocco is both a magical and mysterious city filled with ancient traditions, folklore and it’s own sense of fashion.

I had an epiphany when I noticed that a lot of the local women of Morocco were wearing beautiful leather slip-on shoes, called the Balgha, on their feet. At the time, I had been suffering with swollen ankles from the frequent long flights and the heat of Spain and Marrakech. I realized that there must be something to having shoes that allows your feet to have free circulation, especially in the warmer climates.

My friend and I soon discovered a quaint little shop in the Souks of the Medina where an artisan named Ali hand makes traditional Moroccan leather and raffia slip-ons with a modern twist. You get the combination of a beautiful shoe design and the comfort of therapeutic padding in-soles.

My swollen ankles went down and I noticed I could walk for hours without slowing down which is great when you are on vacation.

Everywhere we went tourists were asking us “Where did you get your slip-ons?” because our shoes were so different from the traditional styles they had seen in Marrakech. We, of course, sent them all to Ali’s shop.

When I got back home; I immediately received the same questions about the slip-ons I was wearing so I decided to ask Ali to design a capsule collection for my e-commerce store ShopProprLifestlye.com

There are seven slip-on styles in a variety of colours now available in sizes 6-10.
